What To Plant?
The gardener’s decision on using native plants or exotic species, or both, depends on what you are looking to achieve in your garden. One thing for sure is that you want to be able to attract bees, the great pollinator, to the plants. If you prefer a garden with only indigenous plants it will no doubt do well but it will become even better when bees have exotic flowers to pollinate. Even a few non native varieties will do the job and at the same time, the native flowers will have more visits from the bees.
Imagine ‘thinking’ like a bee and what your preferred food would be. You would look for flowers with lots of pollen and nectar that give vital energy for your mission – to pollinate. The more pollination opportunities you can provide in your garden the better it will produce a wide range of flowers. Matching different flowering plants to their seasons will ensure a continuous source of bee food and flowers virtually all year long.
